Science Discovers Something New and Absurd!

There's a title you don't see all the time.

In this post, my fellow blog Cranky Fitness reports on the topic of Zzz-Mail, or sleep emailing (originally reported on by the Fortean Times). You should read this post. It's pretty amusing. The basic idea is that this woman apparently woke up to discover that she had written several emails inviting friends to come to a party.

"Come tomorrow and sort this hell hole out. Dinner and drinks, 4.pm. Bring wine and caviar only."

My question is - this being a creative prompt and all - is what can you do with this? Throw me ideas that have something to do with the phenomenon of zzz-mail: characters, games, stories, whatever.

Well, there's the obvious: emails that you know better than to send when you're awake. Complaints & insults, hidden crushes, bad jokes. And of course, if you mix up the addresses it could get very bizarre. And PayPal makes subconscious impulse buying too easy? Amazon, too, has a quick click-through. If your account is set up so the emails go to a place you don't check very often, you might not know till the packages start arriving on your doorstep.

I'd take it a step further; what if there's a whole culture and world that is only accessed by sleeping people? E-mail messages, parties, shopping, living; you could have a sleep-spouse, a sleep-job, a sleep-home. What would it be like to discover their existence, all because your sleep-self got careless and sent some e-mails from the wrong address?
